Pirates drop finale without number one 5/3/11

Again, the number one player for Reedley decided to miss a match to rest for a tournament.  The team tried to pick up their play, but it was much of the same.  Chris Vidrio fought valiantly at number one, but gave up after a tie break loss in the first set.  The lone bright spot was Jared Hirata at number two.  He prevailed 7-5, 6-3 against Rodriquez of Madera South.  It was a disappointing development that likely will keep the Pirates out of team playoffs.  In doubles, the match was decided, so both teams played lower level players in spots for experience.  Reedley won at numbers one and three doubles in the meaningless rubber matches.

Reedley staves off Hoover in home finale 4/28/11

It was a struggle, but finally, the RHS Pirates finished the home season versus Hoover High.  The Pirates came out strong and finished the first round with a 4-2 advantage going to the doubles round.  The Pirates looked good even after losing players to grade checks and injury.  The boys ended up with two out of three doubles wins to clinch the match.  Chris Vidrio and Josh Ediger brought the bragging rights in.  They dominated doubles and are beginning to man-handle tennis opponents.  They cruised to clinch with a 6-1, 6-2 result.  Good work boys.

Boys dodge a bullet in final home win 4/14/11

The boys got a break when McLanne's number one player had to miss the match Thursday.  With an injured number three, Jared Hirata, and a scrappy McLane team fresh off a big win, Reedley survived.  That is the best that can be said.  Josh Ediger and Chris Vidrio won in straight sets.  Hirata won a tie breaker and breezed in the second to win over Prem Xiong.  Wes Ruments scored the fourth singles victory with a three setter over Kewn Lee to set up the clincher in doubles.  Vidrio and Ediger powered past Xiong/Xiong 6-0, 6-2 to give the Pirates their fourth win of the season.

Tennis team splits two matches in two days 4/13/11

On Monday and Tuesday, the Pirates had back to back matches.  After a great 5-4 win against Roosevelt on Monday, the boys dropped an uninspired match to Fresno High 2-7.

In those matches, Josh Ediger went undefeated beating Vang Moua 7-6(3) 6-0.  Tuesday, Ediger blasted past Kong Thao 6-2, 6-2.  Chris Vidrio Survived on Monday against Xiong 6-4, 7-6(4).  However, on Tuesday, Bethke continued to plague Vidrio by winning 0-6, 6-2, 7-10.  Wes Ruments won two matches in the two days by topping Yang of Roosevelt 6-1, 6-2.  Then, he outlasted Lee of Fresno 6-1, 1-6, 10-3.

Still working on doubles and being aggressive and hitting all of our shots in practice.

Home losing streak drags to four matches 4/5/11

Due to injury, the team looked flat in singles.  It was an emotional drain to lose Ediger to a mysterious leg injury.  Without the team's number one, the line up moved up and could not muster a win against Madera South.  The Southies destroyed Reedley in the first round by sweeping.  Chris Vidrio fought valiantly at number one, but fell 1-6, 5-7.  Jared Hirata lost another three setter 6-2, 1-6, 2-10.  Jaasiel Gonzalez also worked hard to come back yet still lost in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 5-10 at number four singles.  In doubles, Ediger and Vidrio prevailed 8-6, and Claudio Erherrara and Jacob Del Cid easily won 8-3.  Reedley has lost all four home matches this season.  It is frustrating and sad that the team has had such lousy luck.

Pirates start winning streak 3/31/11

The Pirate tennis squad began the season winning streak with a spirited victory over Hoover for the Battle of the Green.  Both teams sport the green and white, but Reedley earned bragging rights in the first meeting between the two teams.  Ediger continued his run through the NYL with another straight sets victory over Mike Vasquez 6-0, 6-3.  Chris Vidrio finished his first straight sets win over Shawn Trocke 6-1, 6-1 at number two singles.  And Wes Ruments put on a dominant performance at three with a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing of Cory Rudolph.  The most impressive win of the day was fill in number six, Freshman Jacob Del Cid.  The rookie hung on to give the Pirates an all-important fourth win in singles round 6-4, 7-5 over Kalassay of Hoover.  This gave the Pirates the advantage of needing only one win in doubles.

In doubles, Ediger/Vidrio got off to a poor start and trailed 0-3.  The second team of Ruments/Franz trailed also.  But hard luck third set finisher Jared Hirata and his partner Senior, rookie Claudio Erherrara breezed through the first set 6-0, and came back from a 4-1 deficit in the second to win 7-5 to clinch the victory.  "I feel like we are beginning to become a team," mused Coach Kirkland after the victory.  "Just some more work and experience and this team could take off."

Long, dark streak comes to an end 3/29/11

The RHS tennis team took a trip to McLane High School on Tuesday not knowing what to expect.  The boys came away with the first win.  After Ediger and Vidrio, numbers one and two on the team, put away their opponents in straight sets, numbers five and six went down to ignominious defeat.  However, Tuesday was a new day.  Both Wes Ruments at three and Jared Hirata were able to come back and claim tie-breakers they would probably have lost earlier in the season.  Ruments hung in there against Xiong of McLane 7-6 (6) 7-6 (5).  Hirata waited for Lee of McLane to make mistakes and capitalized in a 7-6 (4) 4-6, 10-5 emotionally charged match.  It was a great first victory in singles for Hirata and the first team win of the year by the Pirates.  I hope that some of the leadership for this team starts to assert itself and we realize we can win if we work hard and hang together.  In doubles, the first team of Ediger/Vidrio closed it out with a 6-1, 6-1 cruise in to victory.  Hirata and Ruments held off a game McLane team 7-5, 6-3.  At that stage, Reedley had secured the clincher took home the win.

Pirates run loss streak to seven 3/28/11

Josh Ediger managed to win twice, but the rest of the Pirates could not muster any wins.  Chris Vidrio came the closest with another three set nail-biter.  The tie breaker wasn't close, but Vidrio continues to improve.  In the end, Ediger continues his pursuit of a league title while the rest of the team continues to settle.  Change needs to come for this team.  We need to reestablish some basic skills of tennis and match play.  We will see how this team responds.

Roosevelt rebuffs Reedley in NYL opener 3/22/11

The Pirates had no answers for the Roughriders as they rode roughshod over the boys on another chilly afternoon.  The boys clung to a slim hope after Josh Ediger won in straight sets 7-6 (18) 6-2 over Vang Moua of Roosevelt and Chris Vidrio survived yet another third set tie-breaker.  Vidrio did it this time against Ko Xiong 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the third set tiebreaker.  Yet, the match of the day had to be Ediger's first set marathon that ended 20-18 in the first set breaker.  He then regained his balance and whooshed to an easy second set.  Ediger is figured to be the player to beat in the league tourney this year  Another match worth mentioning was Wes Ruments against Chue Xiong and another third set breaker.  Wes fought back from 4-6 down one set, then seized the second 6-1 before falling in the tie 8-10.  Doubles was entertaining but it still remains apparent that the Pirates need a lot of work and experience before they win.

Chieftains turn bad luck worse for Pirates 3/17/11

Things couldn't get much worse in the preseason for the RHS boys tennis team.  Reedley ran its record to 0-5 this season in the final warm up for the league season which begins next.  The boys could only muster one win in singles.  Number four, Wes Ruments, held on for a valiant win against Sierra's Leland Corn 6-2, 4-6, 12-10.  It was a great win in spite of the rest of the team already off of the court with nary a victory.  There were four tie-breakers played in all, and Reedley only managed to win one of those breakers.  This is a sign that the Pirate boys are close, but continue to have hard luck.  In doubles, Reedley's first team of Chris Vidrio and Josh Ediger built momentum after their second place finish at the Visalia tournament with a doubles win over Feilding and Lemay from Sierra 7-5, 6-2.  We are just about to turn a corner, but it must be before league starts.  Goooo Pirates!

Netter boys just miss again 3/15/11

In Lemoore, the Pirates just missed another opportunity.  With a mixed up doubles lineup and down 2 to 4 after singles, the boys fought tooth and nail to come back for their first victory.  Alas, the Tigers prevailed in the final match at third doubles.

With just two victories by one and two, Josh Ediger 6-1, 6-0, and Chris Vidrio 6-7 (4) 6-4, 11-9, the team decided on a power heavy doubles lineup.  Jared Hirata and Vidrio teamed at first dubs and shelacked Lemoore's one and two 8-2.  Ediger teamed with Doug Franz for the first time and the result was an easy 8-3 victory.  At third doubles, Wes Ruments and Claudio Erherrara also teamed up for their first match together and could not put it together.  They fell 3-8 and had trouble making unforced errors.

Many players have been missing practice and coach has had conferences this week.  It is unfortunate that we are still looking for our first victory.

Bears Bust Pirate Home Opener 3/8/11

Selma came to town on Tuesday, and they left the RHS rackets still hungry for that first win.  Reedley hosted the home opener having lost two straight to Selma and they allowed the Bears to squeak out of town with a narrow 5-4 win.  That drops Reedley to 0-3 in the preseason and a tough road ahead.

Winning for RHS at number one singles and doubles, Josh Ediger had to endure two third set tie-breakers. He prevailed in singles against Sanghera 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.  In doubles, teamed with Chris Vidrio, Ediger out lasted Sanghera/Antunez 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.  Other victories came only in singles as Wes Ruments came from behind to outlast Gonzalez 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.  Eduardo Barragan-Sanchez won his first set 6-3, then lost the second 2-6, before prevailing in the breaker 10-7.  Jaasiel Gonzalez for Reedley lost in three sets at number six singles to Negrete 6-3, 4-6, 8-10.

We see some improvement in the varsity boys, but will they be able to improve enough by the time NYL action begins?  Tune in next time to find out.

Broncos buck Pirates

The RHS Boys Tennis Pirates capped a tough week with a hard-fought but lopsided loss to the Clovis North Broncos.  It was unraveling fast until Reedley number one, Josh Ediger, split sets with Haseeb from CN.  He narrowly succumbed in an 8-10 tie-break.  The final score of 6-3, 6-7(3) 8-10 is the type of war the rest of the RHS team will offer with more experience.  The team is close, they just need more time and practice.  The NYL is not far off, but the RHS rackets will be ready.

Pirates drop first match at Madera

The Reedley Racketeers got off to a slow start on Tuesday when they dropped a one-sided contest to Madera.  The final team score did not represent the progress the Pirates have made since last season.  The top singles slot was a tough one as Josh Ediger fell to one of the valley's best players in Jacub Sheeter 0-6, 0-6.  The rest of the singles ladder was encouraging.  Everyone scored in their matches some games.  Freshman Eduardo Barragan-Sanchez  won three games in the first set of his loss at number five singles and Jaasiel Gonzalez, a rookie Senior, won four games before losing his first set at number six.

In doubles, Chris Vidrio and Ediger played well in a 4-6, 3-6 loss to Sheeter and Nash.  The match of the day was Wes Ruments and Jared Hirata come back from a 1-6 first set to even things up with a 6-4 in the second set.  Alas, the Pirates stumbled in the tie-break third set 6-10.  Great improvement over last year, boys.
