Pirates
and Dekker Finish SeasonReedley
ended their season and short play-off life with a
predictable loss to Monache. With the score tied 3
all after singles and after losing two tie-breakers, the
Pirates were swept in doubles. Great match from
Youri Dekker at number one against Rayani 6-3, 6-0 gave
life to the RHS netters. James Tasy cruised
against Khalid 6-0, 6-3 and Eliu Baltazar survived in
three to Rodriguez 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. But doubles
proved to be the weak spot once again for Reedley.
The Pirates lost every match ignominiously. Two
matches went to tie-breakers where the Pirates continued
their futility in close matches.
Youri Dekker fought hard on Saturday
only to come up short against a tough draw. Dekker
battled against a good Chowchilla player but came up
short in the longest singles match of the first round of
the Valley Playoffs. Dekker had a marvelous season
medalling in the CMAC tournament and qualifying for
valley.

Dekker Number Three Seed in CMAC Finishes Second
Youri Dekker was selected the number
three seed in the CMAC tournament for 2009. He had
a first round bye and then survived two three set
matches before finally succumbing to heat and exhaustion
in a loss to the tournament's number one seed.
Dekker outlasted Stine of Bullard after dropping the
first set. True to dramatic form, Youri dropped
the first set to the number two seed of the tourney and
then roared back to take the match convincingly.
After six sets of tennis in ninety degree heat, the
proud Pirate finally wilted to the number one seed
Jerimishian of Bullard and finished runner up in the
tournament. The top finishers get an automatic
place in the Valley tournaments which begins on
Saturday, May 16th in Clovis. Good luck Youri and
super effort!

Pirates win Final Match of Regular SeasonA
testament to the improved play the Pirates have been
exhibiting the past few weeks, Reedley smashed the
Tigers of Edison High 8-1 to finish CMAC play. The
boys enjoyed the near sweep on Senior day as everyone
won save for number one Youri Dekker who slipped against
Kirkorian of Edison 5-7, 3-6. Other scores were
Josh Ediger breezing past Anderson 6-2, 6-2. Nick
Boldt topped Avalos 7-6(9) 6-0. Ben Janzen creamed
Ngo 6-2, 6-1. James Tasy finished off Aspree 6-0,
6-2. Eliu Baltazar checked Ulrich 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Dekker/Janzen popped Kirkorian/Ngo 8-4, Tasy/Baltazar
smashed Anderson/Avalos 8-5, and Darryn Davis/Jesus
Chapa squeaked by Bountham/Barthel 7-6(10) 6-4.
The Pirates will play
a first round team play-off match on Wednesday, May
13th. Stay tuned for more details. |

RHS Drops a Close One to SangerAfter
the first round Thursday, it looked like the Pirates had
a chance to upset the second place team in the CMAC.
It was three to three when Josh Ediger came off the
court with a third set tie-breaker win against the
Apache's Adam Ung. Ediger fought valiantly to even
the score and start the upset bid. Yet, it wasn't
to be as the doubles round continued to plague the
Pirates in dual match play.
Scores: Dekker
fell to Harris at number one 3-6, 3-6. Ediger
knocked off Ung 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Boldt topped
Anderson 6-4, 6-4. Ben Janzen slipped again to
Ambriz 1-6, 0-6. Tasy lost a tough one to Randhawa
3-6, 3-6. Baltazar came through as he continues to
improve by beating Aaron Mendoza 6-3, 6-0.
Reedley slides
to 7-10 overall, and 3-6 in the CMAC. |

Pirates Boldly Take on BroncosReedley
tennis really put a scare into the Clovis North netters
after ending the first round of singles 3-3. It
was nearly 4-2 Reedley as Youri Dekker at number one
just missed two tie-breakers in his match. It was,
however, a great match for Dekker again as he continues
to improve.
Scores: Dekker
lost to Timm Agatep 6-7(3) 7-5, 11-13. Josh Ediger
fell to Jamad Ryan 3-6, 1-6. Nick Boldt defeated
Rafay Hareeb 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Ben Janzen ducked to
Alex Katich 1-6, 2-6, and Eliu Baltazar finished off
Ritu Jayakrishnan 6-4, 6-4. The doubles were swept
by the Broncos to end the Pirates hopes. Dekker/Boldt
fell to Brar/Agatep 1-6, 2-6. Ediger/Janzen made
it interesting against Ryan/Katich 6-7(2) 6-4,
6-10. Finally, Reedley's three team is learning
from their inexperience with fun, inspired play.
Chapa/Davis were run off by Cypher/Stewart of Clovis
2-6, 2-6.
Reedley runs their record to 7-9, and 3-5 in the CMAC. |

Home Win Over Hoover Keeps Playoff Hopes AliveThe
Pirates came through with a big win Thursday over the
Hoover Patriots at RHS. Reedley played well in
most all of the matches to keep in the playoff
picture. Coach Kirkland has stated all season,
"We don't go to playoffs unless we are at least
.500 or improving." And the RHS netters look
like they are improving, especially at number three
doubles where the new team of Jesus Chapa and Darryn
Davis won in three sets to clinch the match 3-6, 6-2,
10-6. Reedley's previous futility at third doubles
seems to be in the past.
Other scores,
Youri Dekker played his finest match thus far to edge
David Holford 6-4, 6-4. Josh Ediger hung on
against Mal Smith 6-0, 6-4. Nick Boldt Cruised
over Jeff Bier 6-2, 6-3. Ben Janzen fell to Mike
Vasquez 2-6, 0-6. James Tasy came all the way back
from 1-4 in the first to take the match 6-4, 6-1 against
Kin Lok. Eliu Baltazar lost to Garett Valenzuela
3-6, 6-2, 1-10. In doubles, Dekker/Boldt lost to
Holford/Smith 2-8 and Ediger/Janzen squeaked by
Vasquez/Valenzuela
9-8(7). And of course, Chapa/Davis were brilliant
for the decider.
Reedley moved
to 7-8 and 3-4 in the CMAC. Moving up. |

Pirates Fall to KnightsIt
seemed like an enormous break when the RHS Tennis team
arrived at Bullard to find that the Knights were missing
three of their top four players for the day. Yet
the defending valley champs hardly missed the cream of
their team as they dispatched Reedley 9-0 in a show of
their CMAC dominance. Reedley stretched two
matches by playing tie-breakers but fell in both.
Youri Dekker played a first set breaker but only
mustered a 3-7 and slipped to 1-6 in the second
set. Nick Boldt faltered in the first set 4-6, and
finally succumbed in the second set breaker 8-10.
What a match!
The rest of the
scores were Josh Ediger losing to Chris McCoy 2-6,
3-6. Ben Janzen was run off the court by Sandon
Stine 0-6, 0-6. James Tasy fell 2-6, 1-6 to Mitch
Grubb, and Eliu Baltazar was upended by Anthony Kupina
0-6, 2-6. The Knights swept the abbreviated
doubles and only gave up two games while doing it.
Reedley moved
to 6-8 and 2-4 in the CMAC. It was a tough day. |

Rested Pirates Return with Win
The Reedley
Netters returned from spring break with a flourish by
outlasting the Edison Tigers 5-4 without a key piece in
the RHS tennis machine. James Tasy was sick and
missed the match Thursday, but the Pirates managed a win
anyway. Credit goes to the doubles teams as they
got two wins in the final round. This is the cog
that has been missing for the Pirates so far this
season.
The match
started out suspect as number one Josh Ediger dropped a
heart breaker after a slow start to Kirkorian of Edison
0-6, 7-6(3) 5-10, Nick Boldt and Youri Dekker both held
on against Deewannia and Anderson respectively 6-2, 4-6,
10-7 and 6-3, 6-4. Ben Janzen fell to Avolos 3-6,
2-6 in the emergency fill-in for number four. But
up-and-coming Jr. Eliu Baltazar survived Simunovic 6-2,
1-6, 10-4. Carlos Ramirez was dumped by Ngo 2-6,
3-6. But in doubles, after Ediger and Boldt fell
3-6, 2-6 to Simunovic/Kirkorian, Dekker/Janzen defeated
Deedwannia/Ngo 6-0, 7-5. Noe Hernandez and
recently returnee to the team, Jesus Chapa, mowed down
Edison's Aspac/Wong.
Reedley moved
to 6-7 and 2-3 in the CMAC. Nice to return with a
win. |

Dekker Defeats Two at SangerYouri
Dekker won two matches against Sanger on Thursday.
Unfortunately, those were the only two wins the Pirates
scored in their 7-2 loss to the Apaches. Youri won
at third singles against Ethan Anderson 6-4, 6-7(5)
10-2. Then the lad teamed with Nick Boldt without
any rest to win at first doubles. The tandem
turned in a 7-5, 6-1 victory over number one Jordan
Harris from Sanger and Mac Colbert. Great day
Dekker.
The rest of the
Pirates didn't fare well, but with the inspiration of
their number three player and hard work/determination
they may improve for next round. Look out
neighbors, Reedley is on the rise. |

Reedley Goes Down Swinging at Broncos
The Pirates
were game against the Clovis North Broncos this Tuesday,
but the RHS boys were bucked off before doubles
began. Not without a fight however, as Josh Ediger,
Youri Dekker, and Eliu Baltazar had good showings in
tough losses and James Tasy won he only match of the day
for Reedley. James defeated Haseeb of CN 6-1, 6-2. Other
results were: Josh Ediger dropped a match to Brar 4-6,
2-6. Nick Boldt fell to Ryan 0-6, 1-6. Youri
Dekker came close but was denied against a game Agatep
5-7, 3-6. Tasy won but Ben Janzen was bucked by
Katich 2-6, 1-6. Finally, Eliu Baltazar had
chances but succumbed to Ritu Jayakrishnan 5-7, 5-7. In
doubles, Ediger/Dekker washed out to Brar/Agatep 2-6,
5-7. Janzen/Tasy fell to Ryan/Katich 4-6, 1-6.
Third doubles of Carlos Ramirez/Noe Hernandez expired
against Clovis North 0-6, 2-6. Reedley goes again
on Thursday against Sanger. |
