Look for summer tennis
There are several ways to play
tennis this summer. Stay aware by checking this
website from time to time. There already is a
summer league through the USTA and Reedley
College. Write to Coach Kirkland for
details. There may be a camp over the summer and
there are always lessons, tournaments, and just time
to hit with people. Stay competitive, practice
and grow your game. Improve your game by
competition for next season.

Boys fall to Hanford in second round of playoffs
It was a tough loss to end the
season on Friday night. The Pirates fell to the
Bullpups in a quick match that went to several three
set matches. Eric Garner lost at number one to
Carrion 5-7, 2-6, Sean Garner fell to Elliot 6-7(5)
3-6, Youri Dekker just missed at three to DeleCruz
7-6(2) 6-7(4) 4-10, Daniel Foster bailed against

match for RHS 7-5, 4-6, 10-7, and Josh Ediger fell to

In doubles, the Garners fell to the
team that would knock them out of the valley individual
tourney the next day, Carrion/DeleCruz 6-8, Foster/Janzen
lost to Elliot/Silvera 0-8, and Ediger/Moreno won
against Sutherland/Rhodes 8-5. Another year out
in the second round of the valley team
play-offs. Bummer.

Garners win medals at CMAC Tournament
In their final CMAC appearance, Eric
and Sean Garner teamed up to take the third place
medals in doubles. The only loss for the twin
terrors of RHS tennis were to Durley/Telesco
(the eventual champions) in the semi-finals. The
Garners won the third place match against Ung/Wu of
Sanger 6-3, 6-0. Next up for the Reedley doubles
team will be the CIF Valley Championships in
Bakersfield on Saturday, May 10th.

Bullard rebuffs Pirates
In the final CMAC match of the
season, the RHS tennis boys were bitterly roughed up
against the Knights of Bullard High. The Knights
showed why they are the defending valley champions in
division one by trouncing the Pirates 9-0. Both
singles and doubles failed to break through against
the team that will probably be the number one seed in
the valley again this year.
Singles had the Pirates going to
losses quickly. Sean Garner dropped two sets to
Thaxter 0-6, 0-6. Eric Garner fell to Telesco
5-7, 3-6. Youri Dekker suffered also against
Kraft 0-6, 3-6. Nick Boldt went out quickly
against Bivins 0-6, 0-6. Foster continued to
improve but bowed to Durley 2-6, 1-6. Finally,
Josh Ediger worked hard but couldn't pull it off
against Jaramishian 3-6, 0-6.
In doubles, Garner brothers lost to
Telesco/Durley 3-6, 1-6. Dekker/Ben Janzen were
held off by McCoy/Jeremishian 4-6, 2-6.
Foster/Moreno finally gave in to Bivins/Stine 0-6,
1-6. The Pirates settled for third place in the
CMAC with this loss but play-offs loom ahead.

Apaches end Pirate winning streak
The RHS tennis team missed their
chance at second place in the CMAC by losing their
dual match against Sanger Thursday. It was a
bitter defeat to the arch rivals Apaches. It
ended in singles as Sanger's transfer player, Jordan
Harris, from Clovis won both his singles and doubles
matches to keep the Pirates at bay.
In singles, Sean Garner lost to
Harris 0-6, 4-6. Eric Garner couldn't hang on
against Ethan Anderson 6-1, 1-6, 8-10; Youri Dekker
fell to Marcos Mireles 4-6, 6-1, 5-10. Nick
Boldt got crushed by Kevin Wu 0-6, 2-6.
Daniel Foster won, however, against Adam Ung 3-6, 7-6
(4) 11-9. Finally, Josh Ediger folded against
Michael Ambriz 3-6, 4-6.
In doubles, Reedley took two out of
three. Sean and Eric Garner came back against
Anderson/Mireles 4-6, 6-4, 10-2. At number three
doubles, Nick Boldt got some revenge as he teamed with
Josh Moreno to drop Randhawa/Randhawa 7-5, 7-5.
Dekker/Ben Janzen fell to Harris/Aaron Mendoza 6-7 (5)
0-6. Tough match for the Pirates who drop to
third place in the CMAC.

Pirates blank Hoover Patriots 9-0
The RHS tennis team moved to eleven
wins this season as they sprinted past the hapless
Hoover Patriots. Reedley didn't give up a set in
this CMAC contest. Only two more matches left
this season before playoffs begin on May 7th.
In Singles, Reedley worked some
magic as Sean Garner defeated N. Montanez 6-1, 7-5;
Eric Garner won 6-0, 6-4 against D. Holford.
Youri Dekker swept past M. Smith 6-1, 6-2, and Nick
Boldt dispatched K.L. Lay 6-4, 6-2. Daniel
Foster topped J. Bier 6-1, 6-1; and Josh Ediger dusted
J. Regaldo 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, E. Garner/Dekker teamed
up for a win against Montanez/Holford 8-6. Then
S. Garner/Janzen smashed Bier/Fang 8-1. Finally,
Foster/Moreno crushed Robles/Regaldo 8-0. A
dominating performance by the Pirates will surely earn
them a top half seed going into division 2 playoffs in
two weeks.

Reedley looks to play-offs after win against Wildcats
The Pirates celebrated on court
after the narrowest victory in Reedley since
2001. Coach Kirkland gave the play-off nod to
the team after three three set tie-breakers in
doubles. The boys won two of the three in
dramatic fashion as RHS solved the Sunnyside puzzle
this season to win 5-4. Reedley improved to 10-5
over all with the win and now it looks like play-offs
are a definite possibility as the team will end the
season over .500.
In singles, Sean Garner could not
pull it off against a hobbling Bruno Nagel 5-7, 6-2,
8-10. Eric Garner, however, won 6-3, 6-3 against
Travis Johnson. Youri Dekker and Nick Boldt both
won in straight sets against Yang and Vang.
Their scores were almost identical at 6-2, 6-4 and
6-1, 6-4. Daniel Foster fell in three sets
against D. Vang 6-1, 3-6, 6-10. Josh Ediger went
down swinging against R. Vang 4-6, 0-6.
In the exciting doubles matches, E.
Garner/Dekker came back to knock off Johnson/Yang 1-6,
7-6 (5) 10-8. S. Garner/Ben Janzen subsided to
Nagel/D.Vang 3-6, 6-3, 4-10. Finally, in the
last penultimate three-setter, Josh Moreno/Foster just
hung on against W.Yang/T. Vang 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
What a win. What a night! Look out
play-offs!

Pirates top Tigers convincingly
RHS seized their ninth win of the
season against the Edison Tigers on Tuesday despite
sickness and wind. Away in Fresno, the Reedley
High tennis boys galvanized for the second half of
league by rallying and gutting out a good win. A
new line up was much too much for Edison as they
subsided in singles and won their only match late in
doubles.
Sean Garner won for the first time at
number one singles 6-2, 6-4 against Paredes. Other
matches included Eric Garner outslugging Deedwania 6-2,
7-5. Youri Dekker worked through sickness and his
opponent to down Lambert of Edison 6-2, 6-1. Nick
Boldt went three sets in stopping Bittash 1-6, 6-3,
10-8. Daniel Foster and Josh Ediger each prevailed
against Quinlan 6-0, 7-6(6) and Bhakta 6-1, 6-1
respectively.
In doubles, the boys looked improved
as Garner/Garner defeated Edison's one and two 6-0,
6-0. At number three doubles, Ediger/Josh Moreno
won against Ulrich/Irani 6-1, 6-2. The only loss
was bestowed on Janzen/Foster with a 3-6, 6-7(1) loss to
Lambert/Quinlan.

Strange luck benefits RHS against Hoover
The Reedley boys tennis team is
getting good at squeaking by opponents. The
number one singles match on Thursday was a great
example. Eric Garner was down a set and in a
close match when he pulled out the second set 6-4 to set
up a third set tie-breaker. He was
down 4-8 and then 5-9 with Montanez of Hoover serving
for the match. The Hoover number one broke a
string on that serve and never recovered as Eric
turned it around and pulled ahead to win 11-9. Eric's
comeback inspired the rest of the boys.
Sean Garner also won against Holford
6-2, 6-0; Youri Dekker overwhelmed Smith 6-4, 6-2;
Foster playing up at number four defeated Bier 6-2,
6-1; Josh Ediger cruised against Fang 6-2, 6-1; and
Ben Janzen dropped the only match of the day 2-6, 6-2,
5-10.
In doubles the Pirates swept again
with Garner/Dekker downing Montanez/Holford 8-5, S.
Garner/Janzen blew away Smith/Bier 8-1, and Boldt
Toews hung on against Alfonso/Calliway 6-4, 7-6
(4). The RHS Racketeers move to 8-5 and 2-2 in
league after this convincing victory.

Pirates hang on against McLane
It was a close one for the RHS
racket wielders on Tuesday as the boys pulled off a
close one against the Highlanders in Fresno.
In singles, Eric Garner hung on
against Kou Xiong 7-5, 6-1. Also, Sean Garner
defeated Harry Singh 6-2, 6-1 at number two.
Respectively, Youri Dekker demolished Kham Thao 6-1,
6-0; Nick Boldt lost Deng 6-2, 1-6, 7-10, Daniel
Foster lost to Yang 4-6, 6-2, 7-10; and Josh Ediger
lost at six to Ovenephet 4-6, 6-0, 5-10.
Doubles was all Reedley as all three
teams swept past the Highlanders but not without a
fight. Sean Garner/Dekker defeated Xiong/Singh
6-0, 7-5; Eric Garner/Janzen knocked off Deng/Ovenephet
6-4, 6-2; and Foster/Toews defeated Yang/Yang 6-4,
6-3. Good job Pirates.

4/3/2008 Reedley ends losing streak

The losing streak came to an end
Thursday. The boys decided to give coach a
present for his birthday by overwhelming the Tigers

In singles, Eric Garner defeated
Paredes 6-1, 6-0. Elsewhere, Sean Garner
dispatched Krikorian 6-4, 6-2; Youri Dekker survived

Lambert 6-4, 6-4; and Josh Ediger earned his first
varsity win over Brittasan 6-4, 6-4.
Congratulations Josh.

improve. E. Garner/Dekker defeated Paredes/Deedwania
6-1, 6-0; S. Garner/Janzen just squeaked by Krikorian/Nissirian
7-5, 6-4; and Foster/Toews continue to look for a win
with a tough loss in three sets to Quinlan/Bhakta 7-5,
3-6, 3-10.

4/1/2008 Bullard dispatches Pirates
The losing streak stretches to
three. Bullard swept the RHS boys tennis squad
unceremoniously on April Fool's Day to drop Reedley to
0-2 in league and 5-5 overall.
In singles, Eric Garner lost to Nick
Papac at number one 0-6, 1-6. The scores
continued to be one sided for the Knights as follows:
Sean Garner lost to Thaxter 2-6, 0-6; Youri Dekker
dropped two sets to Telesco 0-6, 3-6; Nick Boldt went
down swinging to Kraft 0-6, 1-6; Daniel Foster fell to
Bivins 1-6, 0-6, and Josh Ediger was shut out by
Durley 0-6, 0-6.
In doubles, a similar fate awaited
the Pirates. E. Garner/Dekker lost to Telesco/Jerimisian
1-6, 3-6; S. Garner/Janzen fell to Papac/Stein 0-6,
0-6; and Foster/Toews went south against McCoy/Tong
2-6, 0-6. Not a good match for RHS.

3/27/2008 Reedley boys trounced by
Sanger
Sanger came out last Thursday and shut
the Reedley Pirate boys down in tennis action in
Sanger. Reedley went down in singles 1-5 and the
match was over before the doubles round began.
Youri Dekker was the lone survivor in singles as he
came back with another tough match victory. He
record is very good coming into the midway point of
the season. It looked bleak for Reedley all the
way through until Sean Garner and Ben Janzen stopped a
tough Sanger team with a win in doubles to end the
scoring for the Pirates
Results: Eric Garner lost to
Sanger's Jordan Harris 0-6, 1-6; Sean Garner also lost
at number two to Anderson 5-7, 6-2, 4-10. Dekker
defeated Sanger's Mireles 7-6 (7) 6-4. Nick
Boldt dropped one to Ung 3-6, 1-6. Daniel Foster
slipped up against Randhawa 2-6, 4-6 and Josh Ediger
lost to Ambriz 1-6, 0-6.

fell to Harris/Anderson 1-6, 1-6. Sean Garner/Janzen
won at number two against Randhawa/Mendoza 6-2, 6-4;

Concepcion 5-7, 0-6.

3/13/2008 Pirates just fall short
versus Coyotes
The Reedley boys ran into a speed
bump on Thursday as they fell 4-5 to the Madera High
Coyotes. It was a close match, but Reedley
dropped two third set tie-breakers to drop to 2-4 in
the singles round. The boys made a charge in
doubles, but fell short by one match.
Sean Garner played a superb match at
number two and two doubles winning against Pacho 6-2,
6-1 and teamed with Ben Janzen to prevail 8-6 in
doubles against Sheeter/Pacho. Youri Dekker also
won in singles and doubles with a 6-2, 6-3 win
over Singh and teamed with Eric Garner to hold on over
Uzair/Singh 8-6.

3/11/2008 RHS Nets Bears
The Reedley boys came into Selma on
Tuesday and showed flashes of a
genuine play-off team as they
outlasted the Bears for a final score of 8-1.
Eric Garner had a fine match at
number one as he dismantled Brar of Selma 6-2,
6-1. Other scores included Sean Garner at number
two defeating a game Andy Tang 6-3, 6-3. The
match of the day was Youri Dekker showing excellent
conditioning and patience in his win over Cortina 6-3,
6-4. Also, Nick Boldt topped Diaz 5-7, 6-3, 7-5;
Daniel Foster defeated Amtoj Sanghera 6-3, 6-3; and
Ben Janzen dashed the hopes of De Guzman 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, E. Garner/Foster lost to
Brar/Sanghera 6-8. S. Garner/Janzen came back
from a 3-6 deficit to defeat Cortina/Diaz 8-6 in a
great match. And Josh Ediger/Jeremy Toews
absolutely destroyed Lewis/Felix 8-1.
This brings Reedley's record to 5-2
as they upended the previously undefeated Bears of
Selma fresh off their championship at the Visalia
Tournament.

3/8/2008 Pirate boys nearly take
Redwood Tourney
The boys almost completed the
trifecta on Saturday as they were two points away from
taking the title of the division three (tier one)
championship in Visalia. After winning two team
matches against familiar foes, the Pirates just missed
when the third doubles team of Ediger/Toews couldn't
quite pull out the victory against Redwood. Up
8-7, Josh and Jeremy saw their dreams slip away as
Smith/Menor came back to win the team title.
Other scores were: Eric Garner
defeated Bryant 8-2; Youri Dekker lost to Bookwalter
3-8; Nick Boldt lost to Goodreau 4-8; Daniel Foster dropped to
Cox 4-8; Sean Garner and Ben Janzen defeated
Porter/Gong 8-2 before Ediger/Toews just missed
against Menor/Smith 7-9.
In other matches, Reedley topped
Madera 4-2 and then Sunnyside 3-3 and 42-33 in the tie
breaker, earlier in the morning.
This brings RHS to 4-2 on the
season.

3/5/2008 Reedley boys trounced
by Panthers
The Porterville Panthers came into
Reedley with a 7-1 record on Wednesday 3/5 and showed
why. They swept singles and then took two out of
three in doubles to send the Pirates to an 8-1
defeat. The Reedley netters gave some close
matches before Sean and Eric Garner came up with a win
in doubles 8-6 over Woodmansee and Morag. It was
the Pirates first defeat of the year.
Other scores were: Eric Garner lost
to Woodmansee 5-7, 5-7; Sean Garner lost to Merag 1-6,
4-6; Dekker lost to Galousha 6-4, 4-6, 9-11; Nick
Boldt dropped to Perry 5-7, 3-6; Josh Ediger lost to

to Galousha/Moreno 4-8; Ediger/Jeremy Toews dropped to
Perry/Carillo 2-8.
Most of the matches were close with
many deuce games, but the Pirates rarely came up with
the winner. More work to do for RHS.

Another tough one for the RHS JV tennis team as
they didn't win a match against Sierra on
Wednesday. Eliu Baltazar was the closest to a
win with a 5-6 loss in singles to Cameron from
Sierra. The Jr. Pirates have some work to do to
find the win column. Other results were Freddie
Doerksen lost to Marshall 1-6. Erik Rodriguez
dropped a rough one to Seth 0-6. In doubles,
Josh Moreno and Jonathon Tabutol lost to Cameron and
Seth 2-6. Eliu/Dale Rodriguez just missed with a
